San Francisco-based muralist Jason Jägel has completed a new mural in UN Plaza, at the former Carl’s Junior restaurant site. The Carl’s Jr. restaurant’s lease expired in November of 2017, and while the property owner works on finding a new tenant, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development worked with the property owner, artist and 826 Valencia to help organize the installation of the mural to provide a bright new public art amenity in Civic Center Commons. Jägel’s mural in UN Plaza uses spray paint and acrylic paint pens to intersperse images in a collage-like fashion, relying on abstract connections to foster viewers’ imaginations. British-Trinidadian artist Zak Ové's Invisible Man and the Masque of Blackness installation of 40 identical resin and graphite figurative sculptures will be on display in Civic Center Plaza in the summer of 2018. First exhibited in London, this army of statuesque 6.5 feet tall black masked figurines is an exploration of identity, beauty and power in the African diaspora and serves as the work's American debut. On December 5th, 2017, San Francisco brought the holiday cheer during the Civic Center Tree Lighting in Civic Center Plaza. As snow (of the manufactured variety) fell from the skies, host Honey Mahogany emceed, providing entertaining banter between performances which included vocalist and X-Factor finalist Jason Brock; a cappella glee club Scales of the City, San Francisco A Cappella, and some wildly exuberant dancing by The Tap Dancing Christmas Trees as well as members of Boxcar Theatre's Speakeasy.
