The new Bi-Rite Cafe kiosk in Civic Center Plaza is hosting its Grand Opening on October 23! Normal hours will commence the following day: Monday through Friday, 7am-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10am-4pm. The menu will feature a selection of sandwiches, salads and, of course, soft serve!
The site-responsive design of the cafe, led by architecture firm WRNS Studio, features gates that open to form a canopy, which creates a welcoming sense of place that complements both the new playgrounds and the historic architecture of Civic Center.
As we previous noted in another post, the cafe was made possible by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department in partnership with The Trust for Public Land and Civic Center Community Benefit District (CCCBD). The Helen Diller Family Foundation expanded its $10 million donation (made in 2015 to fund the design and construction of two new vibrant, state-of-the-art playgrounds), with an additional $1 million street cafe, and idea prompted by extensive outreach regarding the playgrounds. The CCCBD selected Bi-Rite, a family-owned San Francisco institution since 1940, to be the operator of the cafe.
